FAQ's on SOLAR POWERED HOMES

Solar Power Information

Want a solar panel system. Set up an entire system when you build our new house totally off grid. Solar energy will only be part of the mix, plan on using a water turbine or other seperate generator. What type of appliances CAN'T you use when you're on alternative power.... the answer is very few as in most are adaptable.

Solar panel systems cost very little to implement if the knowledge is there. Another alternative to a solar panel system is designing your house for passive solar heat. If you do want a solar panel system to augment your utility bill then I recommend you take into consideration how much kw/hr you currently use. How much roofing space you have and the orientation of your roof. Also look at the cost of deep cycle batteries, inverter and contractor fees to install your solar panel system.

Solar Panel: How it works

Renewable energy sources like solar are becoming increasingly popular as fossil fuels become more expensive to find and mine. This cost is passed on to consumers and in some cases, it is now more sensible to install solar panels, rather than using the electricity from the grid. In regions like California, it is logical not only in terms of cost, but it is the ideal climate for solar energy creation. This article covers the solar panel and the how and why most houses will have one on the roof in the near future.

A solar panel is composed of a number of solar cells. Solar cells are usually made of silicon dioxide. When sunlight strikes these cells, it causes a reaction that moves an electron from silicon dioxide. The displacement of an electron moving from one cell to another cell causes a direct current (DC) of electricity to pass through the solar panel.

Direct current is generally used for radios and other equipment battery. It is not useful in most homes because they use alternating current (AC). This is partly a legacy form the grid. AC is easier to transport than DC....
