The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 was signed by the House of Representatives on October 3, 2008 and included, among other things, an eight year extension of the solar investment tax credit. Additional provisions in the bill mean approximately $18 billion dollars in renewable tax credits across the board, not only for solar power but for wind energy and other clean fuel sources as well. The bill not only extends current energy source tax credits, but can ensure that further research and testing will continue on new and breakthrough technologies as well.

The newly extended incentive plan removes the $2,000 upper limit from the tax credit and uses 30% of the total cost instead, making it fairer for those who are opting for larger, whole home systems. Now those who are installing systems that cost $56,000 for instance could save $16,800, rather than the flat $2,000 previously offered.

In addition to federal incentives, some states offer some tax rebates and other incentives of their own, like for thermal systems, but this is individual and varies from state to state. The federal money, however, is enough to make many people change their mind about having a solar power array installed. The tax credit is available for existing homes, new construction and secondary homes, but not for rentals. The credit can also be used by utilities after a restriction was removed from the policy.
